Granja M. Viader

Since moving to Barcelona, I have started a personal reportage project working with some of the oldest businesses in the city. Many of these businesses have sadly closed over the years, so I wanted to create this project to capture the beauty, character and story of these locations that are such an important part of Barcelona’s history - sharing more about the core and authentic side of this beautiful city.

As a reportage project the process has a big focus on working with the community and spending time on location learning from the people who work in these locations. I spent my time drawing on location, filming and interviewing the owners whilst learning more of the behind the scenes and development of the businesses. This information has then been turned into a documentary format to go alongside the illustrations.

Granja M. Viader in Barcelona is a fifth-generation family-run café/deli and is full of history and character. When entering you step back in time, as the family has kept much of the authenticity and design from when they first opened in 1870 as a dairy. They are best known for their cold chocolate drink, Cacaolat, and have been using the same recipe since 1931.

Mesón del Cafè 1909

I always love drawing in places full of history and character. Mesón del Cafè is a the oldest bar in Barcelona, located in the Gothic Quarter since 1909. The interior remains similar to when it was first built, full of lovely details and an authentic atmosphere. My favourite way to start reportage projects is by drawing on location to first understand and capture the location.
